The 2013 ASHA conference is being held at the Former Kings School in Parramatta, NSW on the 5th and 6th of October 2013. Parramatta is Australia’s second oldest city, part of the World Heritage Convict Sites Listing and home to a significant Aboriginal and Historical archaeological resource which is increasingly threatened by fast paced urban development.

The conference theme is designed to highlight the archaeology of urban places and returns the conference to its roots with a focus on all aspects of archaeological practice. We particularly encourage Sessions and Papers that consider the results of archaeological investigations of urban sites and what these narratives can tell us
about the development of the environments we live in, including people, places, and
technology.

Papers are invited for the following sessions:

Writing articles for publication

A Workshop run by Dr Iain Stuart (JCIS Consultants)

Where: Parramatta -TBA

Cost: Included in ASHA conference fees

When: Friday 4th October 2013

Publication is often an elusive goal in archaeology. Some people seem to have the gift of writing papers and books and others, and I suspect this is the majority of people, struggle with getting started and getting through the process of writing to the end product. Yet we all have something to say; be it a piece of interesting information, a view on a particular debate or a direction that you think archaeology should go. Not being able to publish silences your voice and can be immensely frustrating.

Above all wiring requires courage as well as organisation and technique. The specific aim of the workshop is to encourage people to publish and to provide some ideas and tools on how to do so. The general aim of this workshop is to try and increase the trickle of articles currently being published to a much more healthy flow.

The workshop will be held over 2.5 hours with a fairly generous coffee break/discussion time in the middle (to encourage discussion). A small number of people would participate in a workshop setting with plenty of interaction.

Everyone is to bring a blank piece of ruled paper; a writing implement, one or more ideas.

The general structure of the workshop is

Introduction

We all meet each other; establish some rules …etc

Why publish?

Set out some positives

What to publish and where??

Discussion on types of publication, books, journals, poplar articles, blogs …etc. Followed by a discussion where to send the manuscript

Preparing a Manuscript

Structure of the manuscript and development of the argument

Writing practices and Style

Supporting information – plans, images, graphics

References

Presenting the manuscript

Copyright and IP

After years of hard work and organisation, the ASHA Journal Australasian Historical Archaeology is now available on JSTOR web site at http://www.jstor.org

The ASHA archive available on JSTOR currently extends from vol 1 to vol 23 (2005), with more journals to be added over time. Current journals from the last five years will only be available on the Members Pages of the ASHA web site.

Listing of ASHA Journals on JSTOR will lead to greater awareness of the society in the international archaeological community.

The project was initiated by Martin Gibbs, but the project has been organised by Peter Davies who undertook the massive job of organising the practicalities of the data transferral and associated administration. Many thanks go to Peter and Martin for all their hard work in organising this wonderful resource.
